NJF clams:

We are mindful of the realities surrounding planned unassisted births and strongly recommend the presence of a licensed midwife, while recognizing that choosing to give birth without the presence of midwife should prompt reflection on why such a decision feels necessary.

No woman should have to compromise her autonomy to access a midwife.

A first step is to ensure accessible, high-quality continuity of care, where women know and trust their midwife. This must be accompanied by genuine choice of birth setting, including hospital, midwifery-led units, and home birth services. The Nordic Federation of Midwives (NJF) advocates for a system that guarantees autonomy, differentiated levels of care, safety, respect, and professional support across all Nordic countries.
